General Questions:
What is Xeniversity?
Xeniversity is a learning center designed to take advantage of the immersive communication and interaction possible in a Virtual World such as Second Life, and use its potential as an education and training platform.
Who is teaching the classes?
We currently have classes planned to be taught by some of SL’s most talented and community involved content producers. We’ll be updating our instructor page as we grow.
What language are classes taught in?
Classes are currently taught in english via SL voice. We will be expanding these options as time and demand permit.
Registering for Class:
How much does it cost?
Each class or course sequence’s price is listed in it’s description page.
How do I pay for classes? What payment options are available?
Registration and payment are handled at our in world terminals. We are currently accepting payment in Linden Dollars only. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Xeniversity/208/234/81
What prerequisites do I need ?
Each class or course sequence page lists its software and hardware requirements.
Class Requirements:
What type of machine do I need?
While i wide variety of system configurations might be needed depending on the class, students should at minimum have a machine and internet connection capable of running SecondLife at moderate settings. In addition, a minimum screen resolution of 1280×800 is required for proper viewing, with 1680×1050 or higher being recommended. For advanced classes, a dual-monitor setup is recommended to facilitate following along in exercises.
Besides my machine, what other equipment do I need?
A headset with mic. As the course instructor will often be using an application full screen, text chat will not always be visible, so voice communication is paramount. We ask that students not use a laptop’s mic as feedback between the mic and speakers due to proximity is frequently a problem.
Can I take a class if I have a MAC? What about a Linux Box?
Use of apple computers is fully supported, though certain classes may list software applications that are not available outside of windows. In these cases we recommend running windows through the bootcamp functionality.
Use of linux machines is fully supported so long as the student is using a viewer which has full voice support.
Attending Class:
Do classes have homework?
In almost all cases sequences have required homework between sessions. This is to ingrain techniques and processes and to ensure that students are absorbing concepts from the previous session.
Do I need to buy books ?
No texts are currently required or recommended.
Do I need to buy or liscense programs?
Students are required to obtain versions of all required software themselves. Currently enrolled college students are advised to check with education software resellers, as discounted educational version of most apps is available.
Is a podcast or video log available of the class?
Currently we are unable to record and distribute class sessions to students due to the high resolution required and other technical constraints. Students are free to attempt to do so for their own personal use so long as said video/audio recordings are not distributed. By registering for class students agree to abide by these constraints.
